St. Mary's, Barningham Winter
an historic parish church set in a Humphry Repton parkland within a vibrant benefice
Project 2016
St. Mary's is ready for the next 100 years following
the completion of a major programme of repairs
and conservation work that began in 2016.
Over the last ten years cracks had appeared in the
main body of the church leading to water retention
within the walls. The ruinous parts of the building,
so key to its romantic character, had deteriorated to
such an extent that the font in the tower could not
be used for baptisms without fear of masonry or
flint falling.
As a tiny parish we could not begin to fund this work but we were fortunate to obtain a large Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant followed by generous grants from The National Churches Trust and the Norfolk Churches Trust. Without these monies we could not have even considered on embarking on such an ambitious plan and the fabric of this much loved church would have deteriorated until it would have been no longer safe to use.
Thankfully it is now preserved and in 2018 we celebrated with a long list of visits and events. Please keep an eye on our services and events page to see what we will be doing in 2020, due to Covid-19 there will be restrictions on what we can do but perhaps 2021 will be a bumper year!
